The annual conference put on by the Phoenix Screenwriters Association provides invaluable tools, training, networking, and insight into the art of screenwriting that will in turn help you grow and flourish in your craft. I’ve had the pleasure of attending the previous two conferences and am greatly looking forward to this year’s as well.
As a novelist breaking into the world of screenwriting, I had a lot to learn about this unique landscape and the tools needed to be effective at the art form. By attending the conference I was able to learn fundamentals such as working out runtime to page count, when to use various headers and parentheticals, structure, formatting, and more. In terms of design theory, I gained insight into the difference between spec scripts, pilots, etcetera, how to make the most effective use of the limited real estate you have to write a screenplay compared to a novel, recommended software to make certain my screenplay is structured correctly and easily every time, as well as insight into the process from conception to pitch.
One of the most valuable things the conference offers is a wide array of perspectives straight from the mouths of artists who have made their mark in the industry. There is no simple silver bullet to this industry, rather a multitude of valid paths the like of which can be overwhelming to discern on your own. Learning from writers such as Bob Saenz, Pilar Allesandra, Bill True, Chris Lamont and more, I was able to gain a broad toolkit to apply to a variety of situations whether working on a feature film, a short, a TV pilot, a limited series, and everything in-between.
Whether you’re a seasoned writer or just getting started, I guarantee there is a wealth of value offered at this conference, and as icing on the cake you’ll make friendships and connections that will spur you on and encourage you as jump into your journey.
